Let the chocolate do the selling

A window turns the chocolates into the main picture on the box. Painted bon bons, coloured truffles and neat rows of squares all look better seen than described.

It also saves staff from opening boxes on the counter to show customers what is inside.

Frame the window with print

Keep artwork near the window simple so it frames the pieces rather than competing with them. A logo above and the collection name below is often enough.

Foil around the edge of the window adds a fine metallic border.

What is a window chocolate box?

It is a printed box with an opening cut into one panel and a clear film fixed behind it. The film keeps the chocolates covered while letting the customer see them, so the box can sit on an open shelf and still show off what you made.

The photos show four ways to use a window: an oval in a white lid, a full clear top on a square box, a square window in a gold lid and a tall slot down the front of a bar box. Each one is cut to suit the box, and yours will be cut to suit your chocolates and your artwork.

Window boxes are popular with shops that sell from a display rather than over a counter, because the box does the explaining on its own.

Where should the window go?

Most windows sit in the lid, centred over the chocolates. On a bar box the window usually runs down the front so the wrapped bar shows through. On a tuck box it can sit on the front face so the box works standing up on a shelf.

Think about how the box will be displayed. A box laid flat in a cabinet wants a window on top. A box stood up on a shelf wants one on the face that points at the customer.

On a lid and base box, the window can also sit in the side wall of a deep lid. That shows a single row of pieces from the front and leaves the whole top free for a large logo, which suits a box stacked several high in a display.

Which window shape suits your chocolates?

A full clear lid shows the most, but leaves less room for print. A smaller window leaves space for your branding and still gives a clear view of the best pieces.

Should a window box have an insert?

Usually, yes. Through a window every gap and every crooked piece is on show, so a card insert or a food-safe PET tray keeps the layout tidy from the first customer to the last.

A dark tray under a clear window makes milk and white chocolates stand out. A gold or clear tray suits darker pieces. If the pieces are firm and wrapped, a simple card pad on the floor of the box can be enough.

If you want to compare the options, our guide to inserts and trays for chocolates sets them side by side.

How is the film fixed into the box?

The opening is die cut while the box is still flat. A sheet of clear film is then glued to the inside of the panel, a little larger than the opening so it holds firmly on every side.

Because the film is fitted before the box is folded, the boxes still arrive flat. You fold them up exactly as you would a box without a window.

The film is cut with a small overlap all round, so the edge of the opening looks crisp from outside and no glue line shows. On rigid boxes the window is cut into the wrapped board before the paper is applied, so the edges are covered and smooth.

What should be printed around the window?

Keep fine text away from the edge of the window. The cut line needs a small clear margin so letters are not trimmed.

  • Your logo above or beside the window
  • The collection name or flavour range under it
  • The number of pieces on a side panel
  • Ingredients and allergen text on the base
  • A short line about the maker inside the lid

Who uses window chocolate boxes?

Chocolate shops with open shelving, farm shops, delis and cafes that sell boxes beside the till are the main buyers. Bakeries use them for chocolate-dipped treats, and wedding and party planners use small window boxes as favours.

They also suit gift shops that stock several makers. A box that shows its contents does not need a member of staff to describe it, which matters on a busy day.

Makers who sell at markets like them too. A stall table full of window boxes shows the whole range at a glance, and customers can pick a box without asking for a sample tray to be opened.

How do you fill a window box?

  1. Fold the base and the lid flat side up so the film stays clean.
  2. Place the insert or tray into the base.
  3. Fill the chocolates, checking the view through the lid as you go.
  4. Close the lid and wipe the film with a dry cloth if needed.
  5. Add a band or seal along the side so the box stays closed on the shelf.

What are the common mistakes?

Placing the window where a fold or a lid edge crosses it is the first. The second is a window larger than the tray, which shows bare card at the edges. We check both when we draw the box.

A third is choosing a full clear lid for pieces that mark easily. Customers lift and tilt window boxes to look, so a snug insert matters more than it would in a closed box.

How long do window boxes take?

Production is 4 to 6 working days after you approve the free design proof for card boxes and 8 to 10 for rigid ones. Free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2 to 3 working days after that.

If any boxes arrive misprinted or damaged, tell us within 10 days and we reprint them or refund you.

How do you order window chocolate boxes?

Send the piece count, one piece size in mm, the window shape you like and your logo. The Price this box panel, the quote form and WhatsApp all work.

We reply by email within one working day with a price and a box size. Minimums are low and quoted per job.

Window Chocolate Boxes questions

More answers in Help, or WhatsApp us on +44 7578 382054.

Can the window on a chocolate box be a custom shape?

Yes. Oblong, oval, round, square and custom outlines such as a heart or your logo shape can all be cut.

Is the window film on a chocolate box food-safe?

The film is a clear packaging film fixed behind the opening. The chocolates sit in an insert or cups below it, so they are not pressed against it.

Will window chocolate boxes still arrive flat?

Yes. The film is fixed before the box is folded, so they arrive flat and fold up as normal.

Can a window chocolate box have a printed inside lid?

Yes, as long as the print stays clear of the window area.

Does a window box need an insert for truffles?

We recommend one. Through the window every gap is on show, so a tray keeps the layout neat.

Can a chocolate bar box have a window?

Yes. A tall window down the front of a bar box shows the wrap or the bar itself.

How do I stop the window film getting scratched?

Fold the boxes with the film side up and wipe with a dry, soft cloth if needed.

Can foil be used around a chocolate box window?

Yes. A foil frame around the window is a popular way to finish it.

Can a window chocolate box be rigid?

Yes. Rigid window boxes are quoted higher and take 8 to 10 working days to make.

How big can the window be on a small chocolate box?

We leave enough board around it for the box to stay strong, usually a margin of several millimetres on every side.

Will I see the window position on the proof?

Yes. The free design proof shows the window cut line over your artwork before anything is printed.

Are window chocolate boxes good for wedding favours?

Yes. Small window boxes holding two or four pieces are a common favour size.
