Round pieces need round pockets

A truffle rolls if it can. A round cavity holds the base of each piece so it stays upright and the dusting stays put.

We size each cavity a touch wider than the truffle so it lifts out without scraping.

The ballotin

A ballotin is a small box with a lid that slides or folds over a deeper base, often seen in chocolate shops. It suits loose truffles sold by the box at a counter.

Ours can be printed all over or with a single logo.

What makes a good truffle box?

A good truffle box does three things. It holds each truffle in its own round pocket, it leaves air above the top so cocoa dusting and piped decoration are not crushed, and it opens in a way that suits where the box is sold.

The photos show four ways of doing it: a small tuck box and a ribboned gift box side by side, a blue ballotin, a large tray of decorated truffles under a brown lid and a nine-piece box beside its navy lid. Each was sized to its own truffles.

Every box we make starts from your truffle, measured across and from base to top, and your chosen piece count.

How big should a truffle box be?

Most hand-rolled truffles are between 20 and 30 mm across. The box grows with the count and the size of each piece. The table shows typical sizes for common counts; your box is always drawn to your own measurements.

PiecesLayoutTypical box sizeTruffle size
42 x 2105 x 105 x 30 mm30 mm

There is more on sizing in our guide to chocolate box sizes by piece count.

Card insert or PET tray for truffles?

Firm, enrobed truffles sit happily in a die-cut card insert with round holes. The box stays all card and the insert can be printed.

Soft, hand-rolled or cocoa-dusted truffles are better in a formed food-safe PET tray. Each cup holds the base of the truffle closely, so it does not roll and the dusting does not spread over the tray. If the box will be posted, PET is the safer choice.

Colour plays a part too. A black tray behind white and milk truffles makes each one stand out, while a gold tray suits dark truffles rolled in cocoa. A printed card insert in the same colour as the lid gives a calm, matching look.

Which box style suits your counter?

Counters that box truffles while the customer waits often prefer a ballotin or tuck end. Shops that pre-pack gift boxes prefer a lid and base with an insert.

  • Ballotin: for loose truffles packed to order at the counter
  • Tuck end: quick to fill, good for 2 to 6 truffles at the till
  • Lid and base: the classic gift box, from 9 to 24 pieces
  • Book style: opens on a spine, suits rigid gift ranges
  • Sleeve and tray: a long row of five or six truffles

How much air goes above a truffle?

A few millimetres between the top of the tallest truffle and the underside of the lid is enough. Less, and the lid marks piped tops or presses dusting flat. More, and the truffles can lift out of their cups if the box is turned over.

If your range mixes rolled truffles with tall piped ones, we size the depth for the tallest piece and deepen the cups a little so the shorter ones still sit low.

We check this on every proof by noting the inside depth of the box against the height you gave us, so you can see the clearance in millimetres before you approve anything.

How do you pack a truffle box?

A printed pad on top of the truffles makes a nice first moment when the lid comes off, and stops the lid touching any decoration.

  1. Fold the base and drop the insert or tray in.
  2. Place truffles from the back row forward so your hand does not brush the filled cups.
  3. Lay a glassine sheet or a printed card pad on top.
  4. Slide or lift the lid on, checking it clears the tallest piece.
  5. Add a ribbon, seal or band around the box.

What should be printed on a truffle box?

The lid carries your logo and the name of the collection. The inside of the lid is the place for a flavour key that matches the layout of the tray, so customers can find the salted caramel without guessing.

The base or a side panel carries ingredients and allergen information, all printed in food-safe inks. A foil logo on a matt lid is a popular finish for truffle gift boxes.

Who buys printed truffle boxes?

Chocolatiers selling by the piece or by the box, bakeries with a truffle cabinet, wedding cake makers adding truffle favours, and cafes that roll their own. Companies order small four piece boxes with a logo for clients and staff.

Truffle boxes are also used for other round sweets such as rum balls, cake pops without the stick and coconut bites.

Seasonal ranges are easy to cover without new boxes. Keep one box size and change a printed band or sticker for each collection, so the tray and lid stay the same all year.

What are the common truffle box mistakes?

Sizing cups to the scoop rather than the finished, coated truffle is the first. Coating and dusting can add a couple of millimetres.

The second is a lid that is too shallow for piped decoration. The third is choosing a card insert for soft truffles that will be posted, where a PET tray would hold them better.

How soon can truffle boxes arrive?

Card truffle boxes are made in 4 to 6 working days once the proof is signed off; rigid ones take 8 to 10. Tracked delivery to the UK mainland is free and arrives in 2 to 3 working days.

Boxes arrive flat, apart from rigid styles, with inserts or trays packed alongside.

How do you order truffle boxes?

Use the panel on this page to send the piece count, the insert type, a box size if you know it and the quantity. Add your email and we send a price within one working day.

Minimums are low and quoted per job. If anything arrives misprinted or damaged, report it within 10 days and we reprint or refund.

Truffle Boxes questions

More answers in Help, or WhatsApp us on +44 7578 382054.

What size cavity does a 25 mm truffle need?

A cavity a couple of millimetres wider than the truffle, deep enough to hold a little over half its height.

Is a PET tray better than card for cocoa-dusted truffles?

Yes. A formed PET tray holds dusted truffles closely and keeps the cocoa from spreading over the tray.

What is a ballotin truffle box?

A small box with a lid that slides or folds over a deeper base, used for truffles packed to order at a counter.

Can a truffle box hold 24 pieces?

Yes. A typical 24 piece box for 22 mm truffles is about 265 x 180 x 25 mm, sized to your own pieces.

How much space should be left above truffles in the box?

A few millimetres above the tallest truffle, so the lid does not touch the decoration.

Can the flavour key go inside the truffle box lid?

Yes. A key matching the tray layout is printed inside the lid.

Can truffle boxes be rigid?

Yes. Rigid truffle boxes are quoted higher and take 8 to 10 working days to make.

Do truffle boxes come with ribbon?

Ribbon is not included, but the box can be printed with a ribbon line or a seal position.

Can one truffle box hold two sizes of truffle?

Yes, especially with a PET tray formed with two cup sizes.

Are truffle boxes good for wedding favours?

Yes. Two and four piece truffle boxes are a common favour size.

Can I order truffle boxes with a printed card pad?

Yes. A printed pad on top of the truffles protects the decoration and carries a message.

How long do printed truffle boxes take?

4 to 6 working days after proof approval for card, 8 to 10 for rigid, plus 2 to 3 working days for delivery.
