Hollow and fragile

A cocoa bomb is a thin chocolate shell full of cocoa and marshmallows. It cracks if it rolls against a wall or a neighbour.

A cup or a shaped insert holds each bomb by its base so it sits still.

Room for the method

Customers need to know how to use a cocoa bomb. A side panel is the place for the steps: drop in a mug, pour hot milk, stir.

Send your wording and we lay it out on the proof.

What are hot chocolate and cocoa bomb boxes?

They are printed boxes made for drinking chocolate products: hollow cocoa bombs, bags of flakes or shavings, cartons of drinking chocolate and stirrers dipped in chocolate. The box is sized around the product, with an insert or cup that holds a bomb still.

The photos show a red cube for a single bomb with a broken bomb in front, a twin-pack carton and a carton-shaped box for a chocolate milk drink. They show formats, not brands; your box carries your own artwork.

These boxes sell most when the weather turns cold, but cafes and gift shops stock them all year as a small treat.

Single, twin or multi pack?

A single cube with a window or a printed lid is the simplest seller. Twin and multi packs raise the value of each sale and look good on a gift shelf.

Multi packs also let you sell a flavour journey: a dark, a milk and a white bomb in a row, or a set of four with a different topping on each. The box tells the story and the insert keeps the order of tasting clear.

How do we size a cocoa bomb box?

Bombs are usually spheres made in a half-sphere mould, so the key number is the diameter. We add a little room around it and set the box height so the lid clears the top, including any drizzle or sprinkles.

For multi packs, we set the spacing so bombs do not touch, with a cup or insert for each.

  1. Measure the diameter of one finished bomb in mm.
  2. Measure its height, including any decoration on top.
  3. Choose single, twin or multi pack.
  4. Choose a cup, a card insert or a window.
  5. Approve the free proof with the method panel laid out.

Should a cocoa bomb sit in a cup?

Yes, in almost every case. A small food-safe PET cup or a card insert with a round hole holds the bomb by its base so it cannot roll. Without one, the shell rubs against the walls and can crack or lose its decoration.

Clear cups suit window boxes because the whole bomb stays visible. Card inserts suit closed boxes and keep everything in paper.

Cups also make packing faster. Each bomb drops into its cup, the lid goes on and the box is done, with no tissue or shredded paper to arrange.

What should be printed on the box?

All print uses food-safe inks. A bold flavour name on the top panel helps when boxes are stacked in a basket and seen from above.

  • Front: logo, flavour and a picture or pattern
  • Side: how to use it, in three or four short steps
  • Back: ingredients, allergens and weight
  • Top or lid: the flavour name for stacked display
  • Inside: a message, if the box is a gift

For finishes that suit a shelf, read our guide on printing and finishing chocolate packaging.

Can the box have a window?

Yes. A window on the front or the lid lets customers see the bomb, which helps a lot because cocoa bombs are bought on looks. Keep a clear cup under the window so the bomb sits neatly in view.

A full clear lid on a single cube shows the whole bomb, while a round window on a twin pack frames each one.

What about hot chocolate kits and flakes?

Hot chocolate flakes, drops and powders usually come in a sealed bag. We size a carton or tuck box around the bag, and you can add a stirrer or a marshmallow pouch beside it.

Kits that pair a bag of flakes with two bombs and a stirrer need a box with a divided insert, so each item has its own space.

A carton-shaped box, like the one in the third photo, suits a drinking chocolate powder sold in a bag. It stands on a shelf, the gable top gives you an extra panel to print and it feels playful.

Who buys these boxes?

Cocoa bomb makers selling online and at markets, cafes with a retail shelf, chocolate shops building a winter range, gift shops and farm shops. Companies also order branded hot chocolate gifts for staff and clients in the colder months.

Party planners order single cubes as favours for birthdays and children's parties.

Small makers often start with a single cube in a window box for market stalls, then add a twin pack once they know which flavours sell together. Because the cube size stays the same, the move is simple.

What mistakes should you avoid?

Sizing to the mould instead of the decorated bomb is the first. A swirl of drizzle and sprinkles can add several millimetres to the height.

The second is leaving out the method. Many buyers have never used a cocoa bomb, and a box without instructions leads to questions. The third is skipping a cup in a multi pack, where bombs knock together in a bag.

How long do these boxes take?

Production is 4 to 6 working days from the approved proof, and the boxes reach any UK mainland address 2 to 3 working days later, tracked at no charge. They arrive flat; cups and inserts are packed alongside.

If a carton arrives misprinted or damaged, tell us within 10 days for a reprint or refund.

How do you order hot chocolate and cocoa bomb boxes?

Give us the diameter and height of a bomb, the pack size, the insert or cup, and your design. If you sell flakes or kits, include the bag size too.

We email a price within one working day. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so you can test a new flavour with a short run.

Hot Chocolate and Cocoa Bomb Boxes questions

More answers in Help, or WhatsApp us on +44 7578 382054.

What size box does a 60 mm cocoa bomb need?

A box a few millimetres wider than 60 mm each way, with height for the bomb and its decoration. We size it from your measurements.

Does a cocoa bomb box need a cup inside?

We recommend one. A cup or card insert stops the bomb rolling and cracking.

Can a cocoa bomb box have a window?

Yes. A window on the front or lid shows the bomb, ideally sitting in a clear cup.

Can I print how to use a cocoa bomb on the box?

Yes. The side panel is the usual place for the steps.

Can a twin pack hold two different cocoa bomb flavours?

Yes. Each bomb has its own cup, so mixed pairs are easy.

Can a hot chocolate kit box hold flakes and bombs together?

Yes, with a divided insert that gives each item its own space.

Are cocoa bomb boxes printed in food-safe inks?

Yes, on every panel.

Do cocoa bomb boxes arrive flat?

Yes. They arrive flat, with cups or inserts packed separately.

Is kraft board available for hot chocolate boxes?

Yes. Kraft suits a handmade look; white board suits bright colours.

Can cocoa bomb boxes be used as party favours?

Yes. Single cubes are a popular favour size.

How do I measure a decorated cocoa bomb for a box?

Measure the widest diameter and the full height including drizzle and sprinkles.

How long do cocoa bomb boxes take?
