Wrapper or sleeve?

A wrapper is a printed sheet folded around the bar and closed with a seal at the back. A sleeve is a card tube that slides over a wrapped bar.

Wrappers feel traditional and pack tightly; sleeves feel sturdier and can be slipped on in a second.

Room for the facts

Bars need ingredients, allergens and weight on the pack. The back of a wrapper or a sleeve has space for all of it.

Send the text with your artwork and we lay it out clearly on the proof.

What are chocolate bar wrappers and sleeves?

They are the printed outer layer of a chocolate bar. A wrapper is a sheet of paper printed with your design and folded around the bar like a parcel. A sleeve is a strip of card, printed and glued into a flat tube, that slides over the bar from one end.

Both normally go over an inner layer: a foil wrap, a clear inner or a plain paper wrap that keeps the chocolate covered. The outer wrapper or sleeve is where your brand, flavour and product details live.

The photos show patterned paper wrappers next to a bare bar, a foil bar half slid out of its paper wrap and a white wrap folded open to show the bar inside.

Which should you choose for your bars?

Many makers use both: a wrapper for the everyday range and a sleeve for limited editions, so the shelf shows which is which.

How do we size a wrapper to your bar?

A wrapper must cover the front, the back and both ends, with an overlap at the back for the seal. We work it out from three numbers: the length, width and thickness of the bar with its inner wrap on.

Thickness is often forgotten. A bar with a raised pattern or inclusions on top is thicker than the mould suggests, and the wrapper needs that extra to close neatly.

  1. Wrap one bar in its foil or inner.
  2. Measure length, width and thickness in mm.
  3. Tell us whether the seal sits at the back or the ends.
  4. We reply with the flat sheet size within one working day.
  5. Check the free proof, where fold lines are marked over your artwork.

How is a sleeve sized?

A sleeve is sized slightly larger than the wrapped bar, so it slides on without tearing the foil but does not slip off when the bar is picked up. For a bar that will be sold standing on a shelf, we keep the sleeve snug so it does not drop down.

Sleeves can also be open at both ends or closed at one end with a tuck flap, which stops the bar sliding out of a bag.

If you sell bars of two thicknesses, say a plain bar and one with nuts on top, it is worth sizing the sleeve for the thicker one. The thinner bar then sits a touch looser, which is fine laid flat but worth checking if both stand on the same shelf.

What can be printed on a wrapper or sleeve?

Every panel is printed in food-safe inks. Full colour suits patterns and illustrations; a single colour on a tinted paper can look striking and keeps the artwork simple.

  • Front: logo, bar name, cocoa percentage and flavour
  • Back: ingredients, allergens, weight and your address
  • Ends: flavour name, so a stacked bar can be read from the side
  • Inside of the wrapper: a short story or a pattern
  • Barcode area, if you sell through other shops

Which finish suits a bar wrapper?

Matt paper feels natural and suits craft and single-origin bars. Gloss makes bright colours deeper and suits fun flavours. Soft touch on a sleeve gives a smooth, velvety feel and is often used for gift bars.

Foil on the logo works best on card sleeves, because the firm board keeps the foil crisp.

If you plan to write the batch number or a best before date by hand, choose matt. Pen and stamp ink sit well on matt paper and smudge on gloss.

Who uses printed bar wrappers?

Bean to bar makers, small chocolate brands selling online, cafes making their own bars, farm shops and market stalls. Companies also order them for event and thank-you bars with a logo on the front.

Because a wrapper is just printed paper, it is a gentle first step for a new brand. You can change the design for a new flavour without changing any boxes.

Wrappers also travel well. A wrapped bar posts in a small padded envelope, and a printed wrapper makes the parcel feel like a present the moment it is opened.

Can sleeves group bars into a multipack?

Yes. A wider sleeve can hold two or three bars stacked together, which turns single bars into a tasting set. A belly band, which is a narrower strip around the middle, does the same job with less board and leaves more of each bar on show.

These suit gift shops and corporate orders, where a set of three flavours makes a neat present.

What mistakes should you avoid?

Measuring the bare bar instead of the wrapped one is the first. Foil and inner wrap add a little all round, enough to stop a wrapper closing.

The second is placing text on a fold. We mark fold lines on the proof so you can move anything that falls on one.

The third is a sleeve that is too loose for a shelf display. Bars standing upright need a snugger fit than bars laid flat.

How long do wrappers and sleeves take?

Production is 4 to 6 working days after you approve the free design proof. Free tracked UK mainland delivery follows in 2 to 3 working days. Wrappers arrive as flat printed sheets; sleeves arrive glued and flat, ready to open and slide on.

Misprints or damage reported within 10 days of delivery are reprinted or refunded.

How do you order chocolate bar wrappers and sleeves?

Send the size of your wrapped bar, the format you want, the number of designs and your artwork. The panel on this page, the quote form and WhatsApp all reach us.

We reply by email within one working day with a price. Minimums are low and quoted per job, and several flavours can share one order.

Chocolate Bar Wrappers and Sleeves questions

More answers in Help, or WhatsApp us on +44 7578 382054.

Do chocolate bar wrappers come with the foil inner?

The printed wrapper is the outer layer. You wrap the bar in your own foil or inner first, then add the printed wrapper or sleeve.

Can each flavour have a different bar wrapper design?

Yes. Several designs can share one order, each printed on its own sheets.

How do I measure a chocolate bar for a sleeve?

Measure length, width and thickness in mm with the bar already in its foil or inner wrap.

Can a chocolate bar sleeve hold more than one bar?

Yes. A wider sleeve or a belly band can group two or three bars into a set.

Is the ink on bar wrappers food-safe?

Yes. We print wrappers and sleeves with food-safe inks.

Can a bar sleeve have a tuck flap at one end?

Yes. A closed end stops the bar sliding out of a bag or a display.

Is there room for ingredients on a bar wrapper?

Yes. The back of the wrapper or sleeve has space for ingredients, allergens, weight and your address.

Which paper finish suits a craft chocolate bar wrapper?

Matt paper is the usual choice for craft and single-origin bars; gloss suits bright, fun designs.

Can foil be added to a chocolate bar sleeve?

Yes. Foil on the logo works well on card sleeves.

Do bar wrappers arrive pre-folded?

Wrappers arrive as flat printed sheets ready to fold. Sleeves arrive glued and flat.

Will the proof show fold lines on my bar wrapper?

Yes. Fold and seal lines are marked over your artwork on the free proof.

Can I order a small run of bar wrappers for a new flavour?

Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a short first run is fine.
